Mini Maestros is designed especially for children ages 2-8 and their families. Each of the four concerts in the series offers an interactive experience featuring Symphony Tacoma musicians and their instruments. With curriculum developed by Early Childhood Learning experts, the 45-minute “informances” get kids physically and mentally engaged with the music.
The first three concerts highlight a different family of instruments—strings, brass, and percussion. Educator and emcee Shay Ryan (Kiddos and Kin) introduces the instruments and foundational musical concepts. At the same time, costumed musicians demonstrate these concepts through a selection of songs that prompt children to sing, dance, march, and clap.
The grand finale performance is Sergei Prokofiev’s classic Peter and the Wolf, which introduces various orchestral instruments as characters in the Russian folk tale. Featuring the full orchestra, it offers a vivid culmination of the concepts presented in previous concerts.
Each concert is preceded by an instrument “petting zoo” that begins one hour before the performances, giving children the opportunity to touch and try the instruments with the assistance of musicians.
All concerts begin at 2:30 pm, with the instrument petting zoo beginning at 1:30 pm. Tickets to individual concerts are $13 for children and $16 for adults (including box office fees).
