Mission/Commitment Statement

Symphony Tacoma’s mission is building community through music. Our community consists of our audiences, community partners, musicians, guest artists, professional staff and Board. We are committed to improving diversity, equity and inclusion within all these different constituencies.

We acknowledge the European heritage from which the symphony orchestra arises. At the same time, we believe that our art form is renewed and enriched by embracing different cultures and contemporary influences, as it has done throughout its history. We will continually explore ways to reflect plurality, inclusivity and curiosity in all parts of our organization, including programming.

We strive to increase and maintain diversity amongst our community and will continue to build relationships with individuals as well as other organizations that are reflective of the Puget Sound region.

Land Acknowledgment

We gratefully honor and acknowledge that we rest on the traditional lands of the Puyallup People. The Puyallup People have lived on this land since the beginning of time. They are still here today. They live, work, raise their children, take care of their community, practice their traditional ways and speak the Twulshootseed language- just as their ancestors did.

Guiding Principles

  1. Symphony Tacoma strives to be a diverse organization in terms of patron, employee, board, guest artist, and partner make up, as well as the areas of Tacoma that we engage with.
  2. Symphony Tacoma endeavors to eliminate barriers to entry to symphonic classical music, making our organization accessible to a broad population.
  3. Symphony Tacoma strives to be an inclusive organization and wants every member of our community to feel welcomed both on and off stage.
